A Good Start to a New Contesting Year

2016 got off to an excellent start in Preston where Lancashire Contests presented its annual Brass at the Guild contest. Over 40 bands took part in the contest, many taking the opportunity of playing their area test piece in preparation for the forthcoming regional championships that pave the way to the Albert Hall in London in October. Wingates were no exception and chose to play Cambridge Variations by Philip Sparke.

A first class rendition of the test piece by Wingates brought them a highly credited third place in the contest added to which the Bands principal euphonium player, Chris Robertson, who is studying at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester gained the Best Euphonium award. Chris takes home the Michael Brooke Trophy. The late former Wingates member, Michael, would have been proud to see his award going to a current Wingates player.

Whilst Scotsman Chris takes home his well earned trophy Wingates can proudly display The Squire Eccles Trophy for the next twelve months in its bandroom.
