Sam started playing the trumpet when he was six and had musical flair from very early on. He progressed quickly though his grades, and also played the saxophone and piano. By the time he was 10 years old, he had given up the other instruments and concentrated on his trumpet playing. He joined Sale Training band when he was 8 and the main band when he was 9 and moved onto the cornet. He helped out at Eccles Borough band and then joined Silk Brass in Macclesfield aged 13 where he progressed to the repriano seat within a year. He always wanted to continue his family tradition of playing for Wingates, as his dad and grandad have done in the past, and was lucky enough to be offered a seat in the band in March 2014 when he was 15. He also plays for Fodens Youth Band and has just achieved a distinction in his grade 8 trumpet exam.
