The band are very sorry to announce the death of Jack Bond (Ex-President of Wingates Band), best known nationally and internationally as a very successful captain of Lancashire County Cricket Club in the late 1960s/early 70s. He came from Little Hulton, attended Bolton School, and ‘cut his cricketing teeth’ in the local leagues before being given his first professional contract at Old Trafford. He served the county for many years in various guises as player, coach, team manager, vice-president etc.
Jack was a regular attendee at the Wingates concerts together with his wife Florence who would bring a bag containing raffle prizes – a lovely gesture. When the band were looking for a new president in 2000, Jack was asked, and the band were delighted to hear that Jack had accepted the post. Jack served from 2000 – 2006, when Mr David Kaye succeeded him’.
Jack often reiterated the story of how he fell in love with the sound of a brass band when proudly marching behind a band in church Sermons Sundays processions as a child.
Our sincere condolences are shared with his wife, Florence, and his family.
