Wingates Band are now entering a busy period of music making over the next few months with some exciting new projects linked with the Co-op, Blackrod community centre and one of their sponsors, instrument repairers Brass Toff.
The band have recently competed in the Championship Section of the Regional Brass Band Championships in Blackpool. Competitions are important to the band and it is vital that they maintain their Championship status after 146 years of being established and never once leaving this section. However, they are extremely demanding on all involved and both the players, and their Musical Director Mr Paul Andrews, give an enormous amount of their free time to try to keep the name and history of Wingates Band alive. Now the competition is over, the band are keen to devote their rehearsals back to providing top quality concert music to their local communities and beyond.
The first of a number of projects the Band are embarking on is a Mental Awareness weekend. This initiative has been possible with the financial support and backing of the Co-op Local Community Fund and its members. It has long been recognised that music can help people suffering from any kind of mental illness including Dementia, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and many others. The band has organised a workshop day to invite people to learn how to play a brass instrument with an opportunity to meet other members of the community, to help build self confidence, to meet and play with band members, and above all to have fun. The following day Wingates Band will be providing a FREE concert, where guest speaker Malcolm Rae OBE (co founder of the Rugby League charity ‘State of Mind’) and former rugby player Danny Sculthorpe will give a talk, and the concert will culminate with a couple of pieces from the band and guests. The workshop runs on Saturday 30th March, 1.00-5.00pm, and the FREE concert is Sunday 31st March, 6.00-8.00pm, both are to be held at The Bridge Church, Bolton, BL2 1JX.
The following Friday, 5th April, Wingates Band begins a very exciting series of 4 concerts all being held at the Blackrod Sports and Community Centre. With the title ‘FRIDAY NIGHT IS MUSIC NIGHT!!’, the first Friday of April, May, June and July will see the band perform in a completely different and innovative way for a brass band. Imagine…big band, trumpets, etc…
Friday 5th April will be a celebration of ‘50 years of Pop’, Friday 3rd May is ‘Musicals’ night, Friday 7th June is ‘Rat Pack’ and our final concert of the series will be ‘Audience Favourites’ on Friday 5th July. Each evening is £10.00 and includes a Pie supper.
The third upcoming project for the band is in association with Brass Toff Instrument Repairs and Elliott Brass UK. A concert with the band featuring Elliott Brass Instruments and the renowned euphonium player Lyndon Baglin as guest soloist will take place on Sunday 14th April, at The Pyramid, Palmyra Square, Warrington, WA1 1BL, starting at 6pm. This concert follows a masterclass hosted by Lyndon from 4-5pm. Tickets are available through our email Wingatesbrassband@gmail.com. Concert and workshop £20.00, Workshop only £8.00, Concert £15.00.
