November has seen the band have another busy month beginning with the Remembrance Parade for Astley Bridge British Legion on Sunday 12th November. The band would like to extend its gratitude to the British Legion members and the local community of Astley Bridge for their generosity in fundraising for the band, and we are honoured to announce that we shall be leading the Remembrance Parade next year on Sunday 11th November, in what promises to be a poignant occasion being the Centenary Anniversary of the end of World War One.
Later in the month we held our joint concert with the Band of the King’s Division at The Brindley, Runcorn on Sunday 19th November in aid of The Soldier’s Charity. This concert was enjoyed by both the audience and the bands and culminated in a huge Massed Bands Finale with Drum Corps playing the Reunion And Finale from the film ‘Gettysburg’.
Other positive news is the recent acquisition of a number of new members to the band: John
Dempsey (Tutti Solo Cornet), Ellie Watson (First Tenor Horn), Marianne Garbutt (First Baritone)
Harry Read (Second Trombone) and Tommy Tynan (Bb Bass) and the promotion within the band of Melanie McFarland who becomes the band’s new Solo Tenor Horn player.
The band held its Annual General Meeting on Tuesday 28th November and following what has been a year of extreme highs and lows, particularly in September when we performed at the Symphony Hall in Birmingham in the British Open to announcing the following week the desperate financial situation the band found itself in. Through a lot of hard work by the Management Team, Musical Director and other volunteers within the band we are now starting to find ourselves on a more even keel.
We would like to sincerely thank all who have helped the band so far, including advisors from local charities and network groups, etc. who have offered invaluable advice and support to us. We would also like to thank the members of our Supporters Club, our new Business Patrons, Steve Caunce Ltd, GeeTees and Blinds & Curtains by Nicola Jane, donations from members of the public and more recently Gary and Tracey Dixon who set up a JustGiving page for Gary’s 40th birthday to donate to Wingates Band and raised in excess of £1100 plus Gift Aid!!! In return, some members of the band made a surprise visit to Gary’s birthday party and entertained him, his family and his guests.
The band is definitely on the road to recovery but we have a long way to go with urgent Bandroom repairs required and old equipment needing modern replacements soon.
