Championship Section Brass Band, Wingates Band based in Westhoughton, is appealing to its local community, businesses, fellow bandsmen and brass band enthusiasts for financial assistance to maintain the history and traditions of brass band playing for over 140 years in the Bolton area.
As they rapidly approach competing in the biggest brass band competition in the world on
Saturday 9th September, the first time in 18 years for the band, the ‘British Open’ at the
Birmingham Symphony Hall, preparations are hindered with the band being on the brink of
collapse through a lack of finances.
The band is a self funding organisation, and is now facing the unenviable decision of closing
its musical doors forever if the situation doesn’t improve by the end of the year. A lack of
audiences in more recent times to support its concerts, higher annual running costs and the
cost of maintaining its current high status in the brass banding league are the main reasons
why the band finds itself in this desperate plight.
Band Treasurer, Joy Mooney, an active member of the Westhoughton Community Network,
“The band’s successes in competitions over the last 18 months has been phenomenal,
however the costs of remaining at this elite level has put severe pressure on our finances
and unless we can find support from both business sponsorship and the local community we
face closing the band down for good.”
There are numerous ways in which people can support the band to try and ensure their
future. The band has introduced a new supporters club, which at only £20 per year includes
a free ticket to their annual christmas concert (this year to be held at the The Victoria Hall,
Bolton on the 9th December with the Warrington Male Voice Choir). Businesses can also
help by taking out a Gold, Silver or Bronze sponsorship package, all of which include a large
range of benefits. For further details on any of these packages, please contact Melanie
McFarland on firstname.lastname@example.org or 07770 587227.
The band has a number of upcoming concerts within the local area, including a ‘Best of
British concert (with a proms finale)’ at St Bartholomew’s Church, Westhoughton on
Saturday 21st October, a christmas concert at St. John’s Church, Chorley Road,
Westhoughton on Thursday 7th December and the christmas concert at the The Victoria Hall
in Bolton on Saturday 9th December. If you wish to buy tickets for any of these concerts, or
even book the band for your own event, contact Band Manager, Sue MacDonald, on 01925
