As many band seem to be winding down for the summer Wingates is the exception! Following on from the Grand Shield contest on 12 May , and then a week later taking part in the Whit Friday marches the band then prepared itself for a return to the Octagon Theatre, Bolton. Paul Andrews, the band’s MD, decided to break with the traditional format of a brass band concert and decided to take the audience on a musical journey “around the world in 80 minutes”!
The band commenced the journey starting in America (Fanfare for the Common Man – Copland), taking in the sights of France (The Girl With the Flaxen Hair – Debussy) and Mexico (The Children of Sanchez – Mangione, featuring Beth Dilworth on Flugel) along the way and returning back to England (Crown Imperial – Walton).
The entertainment factor was further enhanced by Rai Hirst, our percussionist and recent addition to the Wingates Team. Rai got into the spirit of the journey a little more so than most with a little bit of comedy, costumes & props. For those who were there you’ll know what we mean!
We hope to return to the Octagon Theatre next year as they celebrate their 40th anniversary.
