Wingates Star in Brassed Off

The band will have little time to wallow in the warm afterglow of the Blackpool Spring Festival success, since further exciting chapters in the Wingates story are imminent.

The band is one of three local ensembles chosen to share the musical load in the forthcoming stage version of the hit film ‘Brassed Off’, which ends a widely-acclaimed National tour at Bolton’s Octagon Theatre with a 31-performance run, commencing on 15th May.

Participation in this prestigious production resonates particularly strongly with Wingates, since, although founded at a Methodist chapel, as most of its musicians worked down the Westhoughton coal mines of yesteryear, the band was widely regarded as a colliery band for many decades.

Perhaps more significant than this, however, is the fact that the dramatic climax of the ‘Brassed Off’ story – where the mythical Grimley Band are crowned as National Champions at the iconic venue of London’s Royal Albert Hall – is a story ‘lived for real’ by Wingates on no less than four occasions, as the local band’s proud record of 11 national championship titles includes 4 won at the National finals in London, and 7 British Open Titles won in Manchester.
